Wildcats advance: Waterford sweeps Trimble to win sectional
WATERFORD - To borrow the words of the immortal Johnny Cash, the Waterford Lady Wildcats were proud to say, "We're going to Jackson."
Waterford pounded out 41 kills opposed to 18 for Trimble and had 12 blocks at the net to go with 45 service points as the Lady Wildcats cruised to a three game sweep of the Lady Tomcats, 25-16, 25-15, 25-16 at Waterford Elementary School Thursday night to claim the sectional title for the fourth straight year.
By claiming the sectional title, the Lady Wildcats are now off to Jackson for the district tournament next week, where as June Carter-Cash said, they're going to go play their hand.
"We did really well. We really came together to get this win," said Waterford senior Alicia Donahue.
Getting that win wasn't all just fun and games, however.
It was worked for.
With games scheduled three, and sometimes four, to a week, during the regular season, there simply isn't a lot of practice time for high school volleyball teams.
So when the Lady Wildcats got the chance for a little gym time this week they were quick to take advantage, and use their improvements on Trimble.
"We were able to work on a lot of things this week," said Waterford volleyball coach Jandy Drayer. "We got to look at film and see where we were struggling. We keyed on those points."
Correcting the basic flaws in their schemes they saw this week in practice, Waterford led for all but nine points on the night, with eight of them coming early in the second game when Trimble played its best volleyball.
Still, despite a solid effort to begin the second game, Trimble had no answer for the Waterford defense, which dug up 46 of the Lady Tomcats' 64 spikes while also causing 28 hitting errors.
"We picked up everything they sent over. We were on the floor hustling," said Waterford junior Brooke Drayer.
Coming out of the gates on fire, the Lady Wildcats dominated the net as they led for the duration of the opening game.
